Maritime safety

We strive to increase the safety in local small ports, both for visitors & the environment. This will hopefully attract more visitors, thus contributing to the local economic & social development.

This Central Baltic project involves Lead partner, Hiiu municipality, and project partner, Aland Islands Life Boat Society. Additionally 6 Estonian & 3 Aland pilot ports are participating in various degrees & roles.

Without the fantastic support of our main sponsor, the European Union, through the Central Baltic Interreg Programme, we couldn’t have done this project. We also want to thank sponsors Ålands Landskapsregering and Hiiu Municipality.

The project will

map current safety level of pilot ports

increase cooperation of ports & VMRO

train port staff & VMRO members

create a safety quality certificate for small ports

do marketing drives for pilot ports

organise joint search & rescue (SAR) exercises

The main results will be

tighter cooperation of ports & VMROs

better skilled staff & volunteers, improved safety equipment

the nucleus of a safety quality sign for small ports

all the above will see increased numbers of visitors to the region
